Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second printing. Hardback, bound in black cloth with red printed titling. 19 × 12.5cm, 153pp + ads. This copy has been inscribed by the author "To R McNair Wilson from the author; with many thanks for a most illuminating evening, March 3, 1936". Robert McNair Wilson was a surgeon, writer (he wrote detective fiction under the name Anthony Wynne), journalist and Liberal Party politician. The medieval guild is deconstructed into political theory and social commentary in this contemporary look at one of the most important social institutions of the Middle Ages. Essential principles and values underlying the guild system are discussed with a view toward applying them to current societal ills such as unemployment, absentee corporate ownership, and employee disenfranchisement. The system, adapted to the needs and circumstances of the 21st century, is discussed as a serious economic alternative to the alleged disasters of capitalism and socialism; indeed, this book proposes it to be the only useful system because of its revolutionary and successful past. Condition: A good reading copy, but there is some patchy fading to the covers and a fair amount of underlining (presumably by McNair Wilson) throughout. Otherwise, the books remains in strong readable condition. Signed by Author(s). …

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a powerful argument for reviving the Guild system, a social and economic model that flourished during the Middle Ages. The author argues that the modern, centralized system of government, driven by political ambitions and bureaucratic hierarchies, has failed to deliver true democracy or societal well-being. Instead, the author advocates for a return to the decentralized, self-governing structure of the Guilds, where citizens are organized primarily by their trades and professions, rather than by geographical location. The book delves into the historical basis of the Guild system, tracing its origins and its role in shaping the social and economic landscapes of past civilizations. It explores the key principles of the Guild system, such as organization by function, self-management, and local autonomy, contrasting these principles with the prevailing centralized structures of modern society. The author masterfully demonstrates how the Guild system could serve as a foundation for a more equitable and prosperous future, by enabling communities to manage their own affairs with greater effectiveness, and fostering a more just and humane social order. This book offers a compelling vision for a more balanced and sustainable future, grounded in the wisdom of the past.
