Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Stover, Frederick (illustrator). 1st Edition. Good; some rubbing/bumping/fraying to extremities; rubbing to cloth and tarnish to gilt titling on spine and vignette on front cover; endpapers and page edges tanned; some light stains to pages 90 & 91; else pages are clean and bright. No dust jacket. Stated FIRST EDITION of this copyright 1946 book. Evans' 18 page preface explains the history of this work. It was shortened, and updated to use more contemporary military uniforms, for presentation before American soldiers, and it was first performed by soldiers in Honolulu in November 1944. It was produced on Broadway by Michael Todd, opening on Dec 13, 1945, and it played for 131 or 147 performances [depending on reference]. The cast of both productions is listed on [unnumbered] pages 188-191. Maurice Evans played Hamlet in both productions. The book includes stage directions for the play, 16 photographs of the Broadway production, and 1/3 page sketches of the production which introduce each scene. Inscribed on frontispiece: "For Philip-Gratefully Maurice". Evans' best-known screen roles are Dr. Zaius in the 1968 film Planet of the Apes and as Samantha Stephens' father, Maurice, on the TV series Bewitched. Signed by Author(s). Book.
