Maspero débute la rédaction de cet ouvrage en 1894 mais l'idée lui en vient en 1875 alors qu'il publie un petit ouvrage du même nom. En chercheur consciencieux, il publie régulièrement ses découvertes dans les revues spécialisées d'égyptologie et en nourrit les cours qu'il dispense au Collège de France et à l'École des hautes études.
