Il commence par l'itinéraire en Lituanie d'un protestant chassé de France par la révocation de l'Édit de Nantes, Christofile, de sa fille Eudoxe (qui, née d'une mère catholique, est alternativement protestante et catholique) et de son gendre Alâtre, et surtout y rapporte leurs entretiens avec les Avaïtes, habitants d'un pays imaginaire.
