The book tells the stories of John Atkinson of the RASC and Jim Craig of 22 New Zealand Battalion as they are captured during the fall of Greece, escape, and return to Athens as special agents. It brings Triumph's war and her people vividly to life without the need to invent any part of her remarkable life. Tragically Triumph's story culminates in her disappearance in January 1942, while on just one last mission before a promised return home for rest and refit. The discovery of her wreck in 2023 has allowed her final patrol and tragic loss with all hands to be reconstructed here in unprecedented detail.

Commander (retired) Alaric William John Portal, R.N. (1861-1906) served in the Royal Navy and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 21 January, 1882. Portal took command of Lizard for passage to Australia in late 1887, but developed a nervous condition in September 1889 while serving as torpedo officer in Orlando. He was retired as unfit on 14 August, 1893. Portal was allowed to assume the rank of Commander on 1 July, 1901. (See dreadnaughtproject[.]org). Captain (later Admiral) Albert Hastings Markham (1841-1918) commanded two of these voyages. He joined the Royal Navy in 1856 at the age of 15 and spent the first eight years of his career on the China Station, travelling out in HMS Camilla and later serving on HMS Niger, HMS Retribution, Imperieuse, HMS Coromandel and HMS Centaur . On 29 November 1872 he was promoted to commander and spent the next six years engaged in Arctic Exploration. As a reward for his efforts in the British Arctic Expedition of 1876, he was promoted to captain. From 1879 to 1882 he was the captain of Triumph, the flagship of the Pacific Station (for which, see below). This logbook records four voyages up and down the Pacific coast of North America from Esquimalt on Vancouver Island, to Valparaiso, and into the Pacific Ocean as far west as Hawaii and Pitcairn's Island, with layovers in the Galapagos, Acapulco, Honolulu, and other ports, as well as an extended layover at Esquimalt on Vancouver Island April 24 to July 21, 1880. 1. HMS Shah (2 Sept. - 1 Dec. 1878) Captain Frederick G. D. Bedford, flag of Rear Admiral Algernon F. R. de Horsey. San Francisco to Valparaiso touching at Panama, Acapulco, Pitcairn Island, Coquimbo.
