Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Condition: (see pics.) Some marks to the top of the pages due to storage. Still in a very good good and tight condition. Synopsis: From a tormented orphan with a clubfoot, Philip Carey grows into an impressionable young man with a voracious appetite for adventure and knowledge. His cravings take him to Paris at age eighteen to try his hand at art, then back to London to study medicine. But even so, nothing can sate his nagging hunger for experience. Then he falls obsessively in love, embarking on a disastrous relationship that will change his life forever. Marked by countless similarities to Maugham s own life, his masterpiece is not an autobiography, as the author himself once contended, but an autobiographical novel; fact and fiction are inexorably mingled; the emotions are my own. .

" This book is not an attack upon a dead man: rather it is the refutation of a libel upon a dead woman" In these words beveryel Nichols sums up the theme of this remarkable and often shocking story, and provides his own justification for writing it. The man is Somerset Maugham - the 'Master'. The woman is his wife Syrie whom he so brutally and, in Mr Nichols' opinion, so unjustifiably attacked, in his final work. Ref FFF 5.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo.pp.153. Presentation from the author: his Compliments slip tipped onto the free endpaper. Biography:"This book is not an attack on a dead man; rather it is the refutation of a libel upon a dead woman." Original publisher's binding in pale yellow with gilt lettering at spine. Loosely inserted newspaper clippings from The Times 17.02.1971 & Books and Bookmen June 1978, with reference to the controversy surrounding Maugham's daughter. Neat name on front pastedown:Gary. January 1967. N.WW.3 Hand-written note (by Gary) on the rear page regarding a mirrored screen mentioned on p.151. /Maugham entered into a relationship with Syrie Wellcome, wife of Henry Wellcome, a pharmaceutical magnate. They had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth (1915Ð1998). Henry Wellcome sued his wife for divorce, naming Maugham as co-respondent. In May 1917, Syrie Wellcome and Maugham married. Syrie Maugham became a noted interior decorator, who in the 1920s popularized "the all-white room." The marriage was unhappy, and the couple separated. In his 1962 memoir Looking Back, Maugham denied paternity of Liza and attempted to have her disinherited in order to adopt his male secretary Alan Searle, suggesting that Liza was actually fathered by either Henry Wellcome, Gordon Selfridge or an unknown lover. Very good in very good dust jacket. Slight wear. Dust jacket slightly used but protected by a clear sleeve.
