Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp 153. Original publisher's cream cloth, lettered gilt at the spine. Signed by the author on front endpaper to Victor Ross (1920- 2021) CEO of Readers Digest and a distinguished book collector. Story of Somerset maugham marriage to Syrie Maugham. Beverley Nichols was very sympathetic to Syrie Maugham. At the end of his life Maugham wrote a bilious attack on his wife, the inspired interior decorator Syrie Maugham. It was published in book form in the US and in the tabloid press in England. Beverley's work is a 'thorough and measured' response --as he states: 'This book is not an attack upon a dead man: rather it is a refutation of a libel upon a dead woman'. Very good indeed in near very good dust jacket, with minor signs of edgewear. Signedes.

Two volumes. Limited Edition and the First Sloan illustrated Edition. With an introduction by Theodore Drieser and with sixteen original etchings by John Sloan. Limited to 1500 copies signed by John Sloan. Tall 8vo, original speckled cloth with leather spine labels. Fine copy, without the box. SOMERSET MAUGHAM S BEST KNOWN NOVEL AND ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE AND APPEALING BOOKS OF THE LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB. These volumes were printed for the Club at the Yale University Press under the supervision Carl Purington Rollins. John Sloan s etched illustrations are a striking addition to Maugham s thinly disguised autobiography. OF HUMAN BONDAGE describes Philip Carey s lonely boyhood in Whitstable (which becomes Blackstable, as Canterbury becomes Tercanbury) and his subsequent adventures. Carey is handicapped by a club foot, much as Maugham was handicapped by a severe stammer.

Second Revised Final script for the 1946 film. Presentation copy belonging to actress Alexis Smith, with her initials in decorative gilt on the front board, bound in full calf. Throughout the script are 5 black-and-white film stills on tipped-in leaves, all featuring Smith and costar, Paul Henreid. Based on W. Somerset Maugham's classic 1915 novel, about a forlorn artist in France who gives up the trade to become a doctor. Philip Cary (Henreid), the artist, meets Mildred Rogers (Eleanor Parker), a waitress, and becomes dreadfully infatuated, in spite of the waitress' complete disregard for him. Eventually the waitress' charms wane and Cary reconnects with a beautiful young writer, Nora Nesbitt (Smith), and their romance flourishes-until Mildred Rogers returns, pregnant and in need. First adapted to film in 1934, directed by John Cromwell, and starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, the novel was also adaptated in 1964 by Ken Hughes, starring Kim Novak and Laurence Harvey, and has been adapted several times for television. Brown full sheepskin boards with gilt titles. Distribution page present, receipt intact. Title page present, dated 6/22/44, with credits for screenwriter Turney. 179 leaves including black and white publicity photos bound in, mimeograph duplication, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 8/12/44 and 8/29/44. Signed limited edition of the address given by Maugham upon the Library's acceptance of the original autograph manuscript of his masterpiece, Of Human Bondage. Octavo, original boards. One of 500 copies signed by W. Somerset Maugham on the front free endpaper. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original accompanying program which is in very good condition. The program contains a brief description of the original autograph manuscript which notes that it is contained in 16 notebooks written on the recto of each leaf, begun in 1911 and finished in 1914. â Maughamâ s longest and most ambitious novel, in which â fact and fiction are inextricably mixed,â draws heavily upon the authorâ s own youth, with circumstances and names scarcely alteredâ (Parker, 63). â As early as 1911 [Maugham] had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel, Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo, near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914â ¦ Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York, where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm. It remains Maughamâ s most impressive literary work, and by the time of his death [1965] was said to have sold ten million copiesâ (DNB). It was the basis for the 1934 film directed by John Cromwell starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis.
