Softcover. Zustand: Good. Winner of the Gustavus Myers Center Award for an Outstanding Book on Human RightsIn 1909 a sensational double killing in Southern California led to what has been called the Wests last famous manhunt. According to contemporary (white) newspapers, an Indian named Willie Boy killed his potential father-in-law in a fit of drunken lust, kidnapped his intended, and fled with her on foot across the desert. They were pursued by several posses, and when the girl slowed his flight, Willie Boy heartlessly raped and murdered her, finally killing himself after a shoot-out with a posse. This story was immortalized in the important Robert Redford film, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969).In The Hunt for Willie Boy: Indian-Hating and Popular Culture, James A. Sandos and Larry E. Burgess correct the story of Willie Boy, a Paiute-Chemehuevi Indian, by weaving in previously unheard Indian voices to explain his motivations and actions and to present a more balanced retelling.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK. 1994. Hardcover. Ex-Library copy. First Printing. Book is tight and square. It has former library book marking; pocket on FFFP, sticker on spine; stamps to front and r ear pastedown and half-title page; textblock top and bottom. Book Condition: VG+ but with library markings, otherwise near fine. DJ: VG+; taped to front and rear pastedowns. Green cloth boards with bright gold lettering on spine. 182 pp. In September 1909, a sensational double killing in Southern California led to the West's last famous manhunt for Willie Boy, a Paiute-Chemehuevi Indian who killed his potential father-in-law and his girl before killing himself. The story has survived more than eight decades of white versions but never a historical account that incorporates pertinent Indian perspectives into the story. The authors breathe life into his story and illuminates how Indian-hating can distort and suppress the past. A very presentable ex-library copy with gentle use in a mylar jacket.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Octavo in glossy pale aqua DJ illus in b/w; xviii, 182 p.: ill., map; 23 cm; bibliographical references (p. [162]-170) and index. "In The Hunt for Willie Boy: Indian-Hating and Popular Culture, James A. Sandos and Larry E. Burgess retell the story of the Paiute-Chemehuevi Indian, Willie Boy, using previously unheard Indian voices and correcting the prevailing white story in almost every major detail. In September 1909 a sensational double killing in Southern California led to what has been called the West's last famous manhunt. According to contemporary (white) newspapers, an Indian named Willie Boy killed his potential father-in-law in a fit of drunken lust, kidnapped his intended, and fled with her on foot across the deserts of Southern California. They were pursued by multiple posses, and when the girl slowed his flight, Willie Boy heartlessly murdered her and ran off. He later returned to the scene of his crime, encountered another posse, and, in the ensuing shoot-out, used his last bullet to kill himself. This story has survived more than eight decades, sustained in large measure by Harry Lawton's well-received novel, Willie Boy: A Desert Manhunt (1960), and then by the important Robert Redford film, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969), based upon the novel. Missing until now, however, has been a historical account that incorporates pertinent Indian perspectives into the story. Sandos and Burgess use three disciplines - history, ethnohistory, and literary analysis - in their attempt to recover the events and motivation of Willie Boy's real story from the realm of popular, Indian-hating culture. Besides examining the story and its changing audiences over the years through the novel, the film, and historical records never used before, Sandos and Burgess center their work on interviews with members of the Chemehuevi Indian families that were directly involved. Presenting their discoveries in a dynamic form more like investigative reporting than conventional history writing, the authors bring the Indian story into a dialogue with the prevailing white version, offering a more balanced retelling. Their message is twofold: methodologically, that ethnohistorical research must take its rightful place in the writing of history; ideologically, that anti-Indian biases have pervaded even the best-intentioned white novels and movies." -- DJ blurb.
