First edition, first printing, of the author's landmark collection of science fiction short stories, which includes "Runaround", in which Asimov sets out for the first time his Three Laws of Robotics. "Historically, Asimov is undeniably important to the establishment of both the scientific and fictional realms of artificial intelligence. In May 1941 the word 'robotics' was first used in print by Asimov in his short story 'Liar!', published by Astounding Science Fiction (OED). Upon realizing he had coined a new and lasting word, Asimov recognized the uniquely profitable position he had created for himself, and along with the successful prediction of space travel, self-driving cars, and war-computers among others, would go on to position himself as a sort of friendly-but-rough-around-the-edges technological herald, someone entertaining, trustworthy, and often right" (Jung). Gia Jung, "Our AI Overlord: The Cultural Persistence of Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics in Understanding Artificial Intelligence", Emergence, 5 June 2018. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, robot design to front cover in black. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom red cloth folding box by the Chelsea Bindery. Ink ownership signature of one Ruth Rayson, dated 1950, to front free endpaper, and her blind stamp to title page. Spine ends lightly bumped; dust jacket price-clipped, minimally rubbed, slight sunning to spine, as usual, the fugitive red still bright, just a few small creases to spine ends and one small chip: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

First edition, first printing. Lublished by Grayson & Grayson in London, 1952. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper, finely illustrated by Mudge Marriott, has some general creasing at the edges and some slight closed tears. The spine tips are nicked and so slightly sunned. It has not been price clipped, showing the original price of '8/6 net'. The original publisher's boards are mostly free from chips and marks, but with one slight mark at the bottom edge. The text blocks are clean throughout, though possibly toned due to poor paper stock. This copy is free from inscriptions and is, overall, in very good condition. Becoming very scarce. A fixup collection made up of science fiction short stories by American writer Asimov. The stories originally appeared in the American magazines Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction between 1940 and 1950.

(humanlike, with a form of artificial intelligence) robots and wrestles with the moral implications of the technology. Asimov?s treatment of robots as being programmed with ethics rather than as marauding metal monsters was greatly influential in the development of science fiction. He, She and It is a cyberpunk novel by Marge Piercy. The story is situated in North America in the near future of the year 2059. At that time, the economic and political power is held by few multis?huge multi-national enterprises with their own social hierarchy that have produced an affluent society. The main part of the population, however, lives in the glop outside of the multis' enclaves within an environment that has mainly been destroyed. Mockingbird is a science fiction novel by American writer Walter Tevis, first published in 1980. It was nominated for a Nebula Award for Best Novel. A central character is Spofforth, dean of New York University and an android who has lived for centuries yet yearns to die. Robopocalypse (2011) is a science fiction novel by Daniel H. Wilson. The book portrays AI out of control when a researcher in robotics explores the capacity of robots. A computer scientist accidentally unleashes a supremely intelligent sentient A.I. named Archos R-14. It becomes self-aware and immediately starts planning the elimination of human civilization and building a new cryptic ecology, where the organic is being merged with robot technology.

ABOUT THE BOOK: This classic science fiction masterwork by Isaac Asimov weaves stories about robots, humanity, and the deep questions of existence into a novel of shocking intelligence and heart. A must-read for science-fiction buffs and literature enjoyers alike. The Guardian I, Robot, the first and most widely read book in Asimov s Robot series, forever changed the world s perception of artificial intelligence. Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-reading robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asimov s trademark. The Three Laws of Robotics: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov formulated the laws governing robots behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete. Tremendously exciting and entertaining . . . Asimov dramatizes an interesting question: How can we live with machines that, generation by generation, grow more intelligent than their creators and not eventually clash with our own invention? Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Description: One of the scarcest books from the First Edition Library is this excellent facsimile of Asimov's science fiction classic. The book is an exact copy of the red cloth Gnome Press original. There is a tiny ding at head of spine, still fine. The dust jacket has one tiny chip at corner of spine head and a series of tiny chips on top of front flap. The photos are the best description. The slipcase is in fine condition with no flaws I can see. Overall a beautiful copy of a book that is very hard to find. First Edition Library Facsimiles had the same weight, size, typeface, art, dust jacket, finish and texture as the originals. Even mistakes (all first edition points are present) were duplicated. The publisher's slip laid in with a description of the book and its first edition points is important to collectors, and this book has it. All our books ship in a box, and ship free within the US.
