In den WarenkorbOriginal cloth binding. Includes numerous inset illustrations. (illustrator). First edition. Includes numerous inset illustrations. First edition. Original cloth binding. (6), 145, [1] p. First edition of Panofsky's groundbreaking first major work in art theory. This is one of the earliest, and the first major theoretical work by Erwin Panofsky (18921968), a pivotal figure in art history. In Idea, Panofsky examines the history of Neoplatonic art theory, focusing on the relationship between intellectual concepts and the imitation of the perceptual world. Panofsky was a German art historian renowned for his innovative approach to art history, which emphasized the analysis of symbolism, historical context, and social factors. He studied philosophy and art history at several German universities, earning his Ph.D. in 1914. In 1920, he was appointed chair of the art history department at the University of Hamburg. Forced to emigrate to the United States in 1934 due to the rise of the Nazi regime, Panofsky began teaching at New York University and later became a permanent professor at Princeton. A member of Aby Warburg's intellectual circle, Panofsky collaborated with Fritz Saxl, librarian of the Warburg Institute, to publish a monograph on Dürer's Melencolia I in 1923. The following year, his landmark book Idea was released as part of the Studien der Bibliothek Warburg series, marking the beginning of his significant contributions to art theory. .
