Prima edizione in ottime condizioni di conservazione, di questa celeberrima raccolta di immagini galanti e alla moda, realizzate dai alcuni dei più grandi illustratori dell'epoca nello stile della Belle Époque, del celebre giornalista, storico dell'arte e della moda, John Grand-Carteret, nato il 6 maggio 1850 a Parigi dove morì il 31 agosto 1927, considerato un pioniere nel campo dell'iconologia. Il suo libro "L'Histoire, la vie, les moeurs et la curiosité par l'Image demeurant une référence". resta un riferimento ancora oggi. Fra gli illustratori: Caronte, Cimirin, Daldani, Otto Frey, Glatz, Jozsa, Juttner, Koeppen, Koystrand, Kuderna, Meyerm, Pascin, Hans Pellar, Reznicek, Riess, Wilhem Schulz, Scholl, Ernest Stern, Th. Zasche. Jhon Grand-Carteret, era figlio del banchiere ugonotto Victor Grand e Marie-Antoinette Carteret, sorella del politico ginevrino Antoine Alfred Désiré Carteret, Iniziò come giornalista a Ginevra, poi si trasferì a Parigi, dove contribuì a "L'Ère nouvelle" con lo pseudonimo di "Historicus". Grande collezionista di incisioni, stampe e disegni, ha dedicato numerose opere alla storia dei costumi attraverso immagini e caricature. Negli studi dedicati alla moda fu un pioniere, traendo ispirazione dal suo maestro Champfleury e unendosi al lavoro innovativo di Eduard Fuchs (1870-1940) sull'immagine. Nel 1883, organizzò una mostra sull'iconografia di Jean-Jacques Rousseau al Pavillon de la Ville de Paris, una sorta di mostra che fu la prima in Francia. Nel marzo 1893 fonda con Émile Rondeau la rivista Le Livre et l'image.
