1st Edition. 1st Edition. Signed. First Edition. Truman Capote's original Birth Certificate - issued in the parish of New Orleans & registered the 3rd day of October, 1924 & showing the birth of Truman Streckfus Persons, September 30th, 1924. A unique document. A bit tattered but still quite bright & clean. In 1928, when Truman was 4, the Certificate was given by Capote's mother, Lillie Mae Faulk Persons [soon to be Capote] to her sister, Lucille Faulk Ingram for safekeeping. Lillie Mae was off to New York to make a new life leaving Truman to the care & nurturing of his Monroeville relatives. Outside of the cousins Truman lived with as a child, Lucille Faulk Ingram & her daughter, Cecilia, were his closest kin. As a fledgling writer looking for solitude, it was in the comfort of Lucille Ingram's home that Truman began to write his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms.

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Hal, who not only ruined this book but wasted his gin. Tru", additionally signed by Capote on the title page and by the recipient on the front free endpaper. Capote's inscription refers to the gin stains affecting the top edge, endpapers, and upper margins of this copy. Capote himself was no stranger to the spirit: the gin martini was for many years his "customary" drink, and during the writing of In Cold Blood, he would start each day with a double martini, and have another with lunch (Clarke, pp. 176, 402). In Cold Blood is one of the most influential "true crime" novels ever written. "Vivid, painstakingly constructed, simultaneously fevered and lingeringly sad. a transfixing read. In 1966, this was a new kind of journalism; now, Capote's revolutionary and compelling approach to narrative non-fiction has been much copied, but rarely bettered" (Colquhoun). This copy is in the first issue dust jacket, with "1/66" printed on the front flap and "Publishers of The American College Dictionary and The Modern Library" on the rear flap. Stanton, p. 6. Gerald Clarke, Capote, 1988; Kate Colquhoun, "Book of a Lifetime: In Cold Blood", Independent, 13 May 2011. Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine lettered in gilt with silver decorations, author's initials to front cover in gilt, purple endpapers, top edge dark blue, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket, designed by S. Neil Fujita. Frontispiece and title page printed in red and black. Lightly bumped and rubbed, some pale damp stains (see note), contents otherwise clean; unclipped jacket lightly creased at extremities, else sharp: a very good copy in near-fine dust jacket.

Mild soiling and light wear to the dustwrapper which has light tape stains to the corners and slightly darker stains to the inside flaps. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. First Trade Edition, First Printing. A Fine copy in deep maroon-burgundy cloth, in a Fine black, tan and maroon dustwrapper, not price-clipped. 343pp. SIGNED by the Author under his name on the title page (no inscription). Capote's carefully and exhaustively researched account, about a multiple murder in Holcomb, Kansas by two drifters, written as what he then called a "non-fiction novel" appeared originally in four installments in The New Yorker, was a sensation, and was largely responsible for Capote's celebrity status throughout the remaning years of his very public life. It is clearly Capote's masterpiece. Q17500.
CAPOTE, Truman. IN COLD BLOOD. A True Account Of A Multiple Murder And Its Consequences. NY: Random House, [1965]. 8vo., maroon cloth in dust jacket. First Trade Edition, top-edge stained, in the earliest dust jacket- with "1/66" on the front flap and with "Publishers Of The American College Dictionary And The Modern Library" at the bottom of the rear flap. With an interesting signed presentation from Capote on the half-title page: "For Peter Bell with all good wishes, Truman Capote." What makes this presentation interesting is that Peter Bell was one of the protagonists in Capote's earliest book "Summer Crossing." Capote began writing the novel in 1944, when he was 19 years old. A draft of the novel was later discovered in a basement apartment in Brooklyn after Capote left it behind. It was not dicovered or published until about 2004. Peter Bell is a sexually ambiguous, preppy friend of the main protagonist in the novel. Was there a "real" Peter Bell? A little more research on this book wouldn't hurt! Near fine (bright); very minor wear (few very tiny nicks & tears base of spine) d/j. $2500.00.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST UK EDITION. The wrapper is in excellent condition with no toning or marks. It has not been price clipped. The book has very light toning to the text block. Also a light indentation mark to the side text block. A small penned mark to the lower text block. Overall a near fine copy with this one being particularly rare due to the author's inscription on the front free end paper. A very sharp copy of Capote's classic crime title. The non-fiction novel is about the brutal slaying of the clutter family by two would-be robbers. It would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced many writers since. The book was successfully adapted into a film of the same name in 1967 and again in 2005 as the biographical portrait Capote. There hasn't been any record of the UK edition being signed by the author at auction over the past 30 years. Making this one very scarce. . Signed by Author(s).
