Sir James Clark (1788-1870) had trained as a surgeon in Edinburgh and gained experience in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. During subsequent European travels, he studied the effects of climate on disease, particularly tuberculosis, and this publication represents an expanded version of his Medical Notes on Climate, Diseases, Hospitals, and Medical Schools in France, Italy, and Switzerland (1820), which is also reissued in this series. A licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians from 1826, and elected to the Royal Society in 1832, Clark became a trusted physician and friend to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection are his Treatise on Pulmonary Consumption (1835) and Memoir of John Conolly (1869).…

Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, occasional small marks or stains, and the former owner's inscription. Covers are clean and intact overall but have much loosening along front and back outer joints (front joint is almost split from top to bottom), moderate wear to edges and corners, light rubbing, several small smudges, and darkening. A Very Good copy. This is the Revised Second Edition of James Clark's medical book about the relationship between physical health and climate. According to his Preface to the Second Edition, Clark gives special attention to principal places in England where invalids have resided for healing or improving their health. He also notes that in this edition he has added "a few observations" about other places that European invalids have frequented to improve their health, namely, the Canary Islands, the Azores, the Bahamas, the Bermudas, and the West Indies. In summarizing the entire work, Clark writes that it is divided into two parts, with the first being dedicated to studies and comparisons of "mild climates" in England and Southern Europe and their influence upon disease and the latter focusing on which principal diseases are "benefited by a mild climate." In this latter section, Clark also discusses the "application of particular climates to the cure of particular diseases." In his discussion of diseases, he especially focuses on consumption and digestive ailments. The following are some of the places and subjects Clark addresses in this book: England, France, Nice (France), Italy, summer residences, Madeira, Atlantic Islands, West Indies, digestive disorders, consumption, "disorders of the larynx, trachea, and bronchia," asthma, gout, chronic rheumatism, "general delicacy of constitution in childhood and youth, "premature decay, or climacteric disease," and "disordered health from hot climates.".…
