Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Smashing H-Block is a political history of the Irish republican struggle against criminalization from 1976 to 1982. This struggle, which culminated in the historic hunger strikes of 1980 and 1981, is widely regarded as a turning point in Irelands Troubles, marking the 'last great wave of activism and mobilization within the nationalist population'. Unlike previous accounts of this period, this fascinating book focuses on the popular movement outside the prisons, challenging republican orthodoxy and stressing the importance of broad-based, grassroots movements in effecting political and social change. Ultimately, it was what happened outside the prisons during these years of protest that reshaped and revitalized modern Irish republicanism. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, 157 pages, b&w photos in text, NOT ex-library. Front endpaper signed by the Author. Book is clean with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Dust jacket shows light creases; price blacked out on front flap (jacket is not clipped). -- From the front flap: "Kevin Lynch and The Irish Hunger Strike is not just another account of that decisive period in Irish History. While it chronicles the historical events of the Hunger Strikes concisely and with great clarity, it also gives the reader an extraordinary insight into the crucial role played by the parents of the men involved. Aidan Hegarty offers a deeply personal account of an unimaginable dilemma faced by the parents of Kevin Lynch as he entered the last days and hours of his young life. He writes of the Lynch family's attempt to come to terms with their son's decision to fast until death with a sensitivity and intimacy which makes this book truly unique. Kevin Lynch and The Irish Hunger Strike is a profoundly moving and compelling version of a remarkable story of courage, loyalty and self-sacrifice. It is an extremely accessible book which will undoubtedly stand the test of time." (Daily Ireland) -- Back cover: "I am not a person for sitting watching the Brits murder my comrades. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The 1981 Irish hunger strike was the culmination of a five-year protest. The Troubles by Irish republican prisoners in Northern Ireland. The protest began as the blanket protest in 1976, when the British government withdrew Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. In 1978, after a number of attacks on prisoners leaving their cells to 'slop out', the dispute escalated into the dirty protest, where prisoners refused to wash and covered the walls of their cells with excrement. In 1980 seven prisoner participated in the first hunger strike, which ended after 53 days. The second hunger strike took place in 1981 and was a showdown between the prisoners and the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. One hunger striker, Bobby Sands, was elected as a Member of Parliament during the strike, prompting media interest from around the world. The strike was called off after ten prisoners had starved themselves to death including Sands, whose funeral was attended by 100,000 people. The strike radicalised nationalist politics, and was the driving force that enabled Sinn Fein to become a mainstream political party. 108 pp. Englisch.
