Light chipping and wear to jacket spine, light edgewear to jacket; spine lightly cocked, boards toned at extremties, slight bump to rear board at top; foxing to textblock edges and occasionally to leaves, small stain to textblock foot, else interior is unmarked. From the jacket: "This story, as told by a prisoner under life sentence, is for people with bold minds, not easily shocked-- people with a post-war outlook. It concerns those whose politics and moral views render them outlaws. The reader will feel compelled to answer the questions which are asked; Communists and Fascists alike will find it incumbent on them to examine Mr. Brett's arguments with scrupulous care".

First edition, first printing. Original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the cloth a little marked, the binding square and the contents without inscriptions or stamps. Text block edges lightly spotted. Complete with the very good pictorial dustwrapper which is a little rubbed and nicked to the extremities. Not price-clipped (7/6net to the front flap). A story told by a prisoner under life sentence. Original black boards with gilt lines and red lettering on the cover and spine, boards are very firm and solid just a bit toned and rubbed with time, Internally 480 clean and unmarked pages with no inscriptions, an inch long piece has been cut from the top of the first free page and the following page, browning on last page only , no other damage, the contents is clean and bright. A very scare and rare copy. Usual toning and shelf wear should be expected.
