The Waverley Novels Border Edition, vol IX. One of Scott's most highly regarded novels, set just after the faliure of the Third Crusade in 1194. The populatity of the novel has been credited with sparking a renewed interest in the Medieval period in the early 19th century. Along with Ivahoe, Robin Hood, Friar Tuck & Richard the Lionheart all make appearances in the novel. 775 grams.

Quarter bound in black leather over blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Top edge gilt, other edges deckled. 8vo. Cloth rubbed and rounded at corners, a little worn at edges, heavy scuff on front panel. Endpapers lightly toned and stained, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Handsome volume. With introductory essay and notes by Andrew Lang.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Octavos. 321; 309 pages. TWO VOLUME SET. Hardcovers bound in decorative brown cloth with elaborate cover designs embossed in gilt. Complete with original brown cloth dust jackets, now in mylar. The jackets show moderate wear. The rear panel to the jacket on Volume 2 has a 2.5 inch long by 1 inch wide damp mark with some wrinkles, but this does not affect the book beneath. Top edges of both text blocks are gilt, which has dulled. Prior owner's bookplate on front paste downs for both volumes. "Louise and Seymour Ullman". In volume one, between pages 16 and 17, there is toning where the ribbon bookmark was placed. In volume two there is a 1 inch long piece of tape placed at the margin on page 179-180; this does not affect the text. The text is toned but otherwise generally clean. There is a Glossary at the end of each volume. Collates complete with 10 full-page illustrations in each volume. An attractive edition.

School prize plate to front pastedown, dated 1912. Light spotting to endpapers and facing blanks, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Sunned and rubbed to spine, with a few marks. Very good. Scott's classic late 12th century tale of the dwindling Saxon nobility on the eve of Richard I's capture by Leopold of Austria, also featuring the first modern characterisation of Robin Hood.
