Erstausgabe Signiert
Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Octavo, 139pp., illustrated. Mild foxing to deckled edges and the endleaves, otherwise a crisp, very good example in the publisher's green cloth. most pages unopened. Dale, the author, was an influential preservationist, who founded the "Regency Society" in Brighton to preserve the area's historical buildings and character from destruction and development. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dale in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper: "Pretending that I gave you this copy, but though I didn't, nevertheless with no less good wishes. Antony Dale." There is also a laid-in handwritten letter from one John Gwinnett of Chichester House in Ditchling, Sussex, addressed to "Denman" (this is quite possibly Thomas Denman, who was the fifth Governor-General of Australia; he lived nearby in Hove, Sussex at the time of writing). The letter, dated in the year of the book's publication (to wit, 22 Dec 1936) reads: "Dear Denman, I fancy you will find this book interesting. The old rascal is in the best [friend?] anyway. It is difficult to see how he came to be so important and be so careless & lazy too. In the arts your charlatan is generally a hard worker. As for the cathedrals I have always thought that the deans & [chapters?] were as much to blame as Wyatt. However. [sic] Hope I shall see you at the punch night at club. Yours, con amore, John Gwinett.".
