Octavo, softbound (stiff yellow illus. slick wrappers), 203 pp. Fine. From lower cover: "Few episodes in American history are more romantic or controversial than the Battle of Little bighorn. For a hundred years scholars have sought a satisfactory explanation of what occurred that fateful day in 1876 when Sioux and Cheyenne warriors overwhelmed the Seventh Cavalry." Custer's men were supposedly superior in every respect except numbers, yet the unorganized and poorly armed Indian warriors inflicted one of the most stinging defeats ever suffered by the U.S. Cavalry. Of all the explanations put forward since then, none will be as controversial as the one offered here by Dr. Marquis, an obscure, dedicated physician who for many years in the first quarter of this century worked with the Cheyenne people near the Custer battlefield. He befriended the aged veterans of the Custer fight, became adept at their sign language, and spent days in conversation with them. The old warriors lilke him, and spoke to him honestly and frrely. After years of working with them, Marquis wrote this book. He had reached a simple but shocking conclusion: the troops at Little Bighorn with Custer had panicked, and most of them had committed suicide! One hundred years after the event, this curious, fascinating book appears. Western Americana, American History, U. S. Hardcover w/ Jacket. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. This 6.5 x 9.5 inch, 203 page hardcover book with dust wrapper is the apparent 1976 printing of this title and probably the first edition with the Two Continents Publishing Group - - with no dating beyond 1976 shown on the copyright page. This book is in fine condition with virtually no wear showing to the brown paper-covered boards and with the interior text in fine condition. The dust wrapper is in near fine condition with only a bit of wear showing to the back panel and with the wrapper now protected by a Brodart cover. This book shows a gift inscription dated 7-30-76 on the half-title. This book is another treatment of that Custer event of 1876 and the author Thomas Marquis talked with numerous individuals that participated in the battle during the early part of the twentieth century and he would publish other titles about western life - - but his analysis of the Custer fight - - with his contention that there was ?an unbridled collapse of soldier morale resulting in a self-extinction? was resisted and rejected and went unpublished until later published after his death. 203 pages.
