Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Harper Lee (1960) 'To Kill a Mockingbird', US first edition, first printing, published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Don Noble | with my best wishes, | Harper Lee". Provenance: signed and inscribed around the year 2000 to literary critic and academic Donald R. Noble, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama. The unsigned book was initially a gift to him from his cousin's husband Bill Badowski (hence the 'Badowski' name to the top of the ffep). Noble had this copy inscribed by Lee via their mutual friend, writer Wayne Greenhaw. Noble himself met Lee several times and published Critical Insights: To Kill a Mockingbird (2009, Salem Press). All this has been confirmed to us by Prof Noble in writing. A wonderful association copy between Alabama writers. Condition: a very good copy in like dust jacket. 'Badowski' written on the top of the ffep. The green cloth spine in very nice shape with no tears and vibrant lettering on the spine. No foxing, page block clean bar one stain on the fore edge. Internally clean with a few pages showing light stains. No bookplates, no stamps anywhere. The original and unrestored dust jacket is NOT price clipped and the correct first issue wrapper with Truman Capote credited as Harper Lee's photographer, and the Jonathan Daniels blurb on the rear flap. The jacket has a few chips to edges and a little rubbing as shown. Diagonal creases to the flaps. Hard to find better copies of a scarce book with its original wrapper which is prone to damage. 5,000 copies were initially printed. A good proportion of those went to public libraries receiving the usual stamp and readership treatment. Most of the fragile dust jackets have not survived the passage of time. Sometimes dealers supply later print dust jackets or jackets with missing flaps. Those are worthless and to be avoided. Adapted as a motion picture in 1962 starring Gregory Peck who was immortalised in his role as Atticus and won the Academy Award (Peck and Lee became life-long friends). The film won two more Oscars in the Screenplay and Art Direction categories. Mockingbird is studied in schools and for English degrees in universities, and remains one of the public's favourite novels. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).
