Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. "Thirteenth Impression" stated to copyright page, and DJ front panel agrees "Thirteenth Printing." NOT price-clipped; original $3.95 price showing. Someone has used a "Magic Marker" to black our four words in blue ballpoint to top of FFE. Bottom edges considerably shelf-worn but interior text block clean & very nice. This copy bears the hand-written name "Harper Lee" to title page. (PLEASE READ FOLLOWING PROVENANCE:) This book belonged to Edna L. Bowling, who ran for public office in Alabama four times in the 1970s and '80s on the minority "Prohibition" party ticket, capturing from 1.1 to 1.6 percent of the vote in her races for Congressional District 6 in 1972 and for Lt. Governor in 1974 and 1978. She fared best in her final race, for Secretary of State, in 1982, when she captured 5 percent of the vote, presumably a protest against Democrat Don Siegelman, who won the seat with 81 percent. Jim Bowling of Dallas, Texas, who sold us this copy, writes: "I was the executor of my grandmother, Edna L Bowling's estate. Most of her books passed to me. She lived in West End, Alabama and was an independent woman who successfully competed in a man's world. She was not famous but well known, since she ran for Governor (sic) several times. She sold encyclopedia's for 30 years. As a former school teacher, she wood go into small towns in Alabama, get to know the educators, city leaders and ask about students in need. She would usually stay in a small town several weeks at a time. She met Mrs. Lee in Monroeville, Alabama and she signed book on a later visit." Comparison Harper Lee signatures are readily available Online. As we claim no special expertise in Harper Lee signatures, prospective buyers are advised to make their own comparisons. (Our fifth and final scan has been artificially darkened to better bring out the signature.) The 1962 film -- screenplay by Horton Foote -- starred Gregory Peck, Robert Duvall, and Mary Badham as Scout. 296 pp. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Harper Lee (1960) 'To Kill a Mockingbird', US first edition, first printing, published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Don Noble | with my best wishes, | Harper Lee". Provenance: signed and inscribed around the year 2000 to literary critic and academic Donald R. Noble, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama. The unsigned book was initially a gift to him from his cousin's husband Bill Badowski (hence the 'Badowski' name to the top of the ffep). Noble had this copy inscribed by Lee via their mutual friend, writer Wayne Greenhaw. Noble himself met Lee several times and published Critical Insights: To Kill a Mockingbird (2009, Salem Press). All this has been confirmed to us by Prof Noble in writing. A wonderful association copy between Alabama writers. Condition: a very good copy in like dust jacket. 'Badowski' written on the top of the ffep. The green cloth spine in very nice shape with no tears and vibrant lettering on the spine. No foxing, page block clean bar one stain on the fore edge. Internally clean with a few pages showing light stains. No bookplates, no stamps anywhere. The original and unrestored dust jacket is NOT price clipped and the correct first issue wrapper with Truman Capote credited as Harper Lee's photographer, and the Jonathan Daniels blurb on the rear flap. The jacket has a few chips to edges and a little rubbing as shown. Diagonal creases to the flaps. Hard to find better copies of a scarce book with its original wrapper which is prone to damage. 5,000 copies were initially printed. A good proportion of those went to public libraries receiving the usual stamp and readership treatment. Most of the fragile dust jackets have not survived the passage of time. Sometimes dealers supply later print dust jackets or jackets with missing flaps. Those are worthless and to be avoided. Adapted as a motion picture in 1962 starring Gregory Peck who was immortalised in his role as Atticus and won the Academy Award (Peck and Lee became life-long friends). The film won two more Oscars in the Screenplay and Art Direction categories. Mockingbird is studied in schools and for English degrees in universities, and remains one of the public's favourite novels. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

Boards. Zustand: Very Good +. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. A handsome, very presentable copy of the 1960 stated 4th impression, SIGNED BY HARPER LEE at the front free endpaper. Solid and VG+ to Near Fine in a crisp, price-intact ($3.95), VG dustjacket --which matches the book by also stating 4th printing on the inside flap. Light creasing along the spine crown and, less so, at the foot of the spine, mild creasing as well along the bottom of the front panel. Still though, tight and impressive in this very early iteration, with its author's lovely signature gracing this copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 53rd Printing. 296 pages. A later printing flat-signed (without inscription) by Harper Lee on the title page. Provenance: purchased in August 2024 from a retired chaplain and dean of students at Yale University Divinity School. He described his acquisition of the autographed book at the time of our transaction "I was in Monroeville, Alabama, and purchased the copy of To Kill a Mockingbird with Harper Lee's signature in late April of 1993. I went to Monroeville that day simply to see the home town of Harper Lee and the setting of my favorite American novel. I visited Montgomery just before and after my day trip to Monroeville--all a part of my six weeks in Birmingham researching the life of The Rev. Dr. John Porter, pastor of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, on whom I was writing a dissertation. I was in Monroeville for several hours, but not longer--it is a very small town. I did not take a photo of the gas station-convenience store where I purchased the book, unfortunately. It was very near Harper Lee's sister's home. The convenience store was unremarkable in every way, except that it had a shelf of To Kill a Mockingbird books signed in black felt tip pen by Harper Lee." The photos he did take included a sign outside the courthouse, announcing ticket sales for the performance of the play based on the novel; the town's water tower; the home of Harper Lee's sister" Those photos are attached to this listing. The book is an unread copy in virtually as-new condition. It is clean, bright, and tight--with a scattering of foxing limited to the edges of the textblock, The dust jacket almost as new: clean, bright, and crisp--with light foxing along the fold of the rear flap and faint toning on the verso. Harper Lee's signature is bold and unfaded. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED. Book.

First Edition, Twenty-Fourth Printing. First edition, Twenty-Fourth printing. Signed by the author Harper Lee to "Topsy" - referencing Harper's interview with the book's previous owner. In a letter sold with the book it states Lee was asked how she developed her novel. She replied that "it just grow'd like Topsy," an idiom taken from Uncle Tom's Cabin. Measuring approximately 8" x 5", with 232 numbered pages. Comes with a brand new facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket for protection and display. This book is in very good condition. Moderate bumping and foxing to spine. Minor foxing and surface wear to the boards and edges of the textblock. Author's signature and inscription on the front endpaper. Interior pages are bright and clean. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee was instantly successful upon publication in 1960. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama in 1936 when she was 10. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. We are always interested in purchasing individual or collections of fine books. Inventory #(O9-29).

A near-fine copy with a touch of wear to the bottom corners in a near-fine dust jacket. Bound in finely woven black cloth spine stamped in gilt; and black paper-covered boards. A splendid collectible signed by Harper Lee, purportedly to one of her doctors. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was 10years old. The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality. The narrator's father, Atticus Finch, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. One critic explains the novel's impact by writing, "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism." 35th Anniversary Edition published in 1995. This is a later printing, with the number line beginning with 10.
