Zustand: Gut. 479 pages 8vo. Nur der Einband mit ganz leichten Gebrauchsspuren. . - The first edition, printed in 2000 copies sold out in less than two months. Standard work which had enormous influence on contemporary social thought and which has been a standard textbook of the social sciences since its publication. It was almost immediately translated into English and has since been translated into every major language of the Western world and is even still printed and circulated today. Tocqueville (1805-59) is of course best known, particularly in the USA, for De la Démocratie en Amérique (1835-40). In that, the first impartial and systematic study of American institutions, he concluded that the trend of history was irresistibly toward equality, and that the future of the Western world lay in the acceptance of democratic principles. It seems only natural that Tocqueville should have next turned his attention to the other great movement toward democracy of the period, the French Revolution. He conceived a work in three sections: l'ancien régime; a history of the events of the Revolution itself; and a life of Napoleon. He only lived to complete the first part. L'ancien régime, which is based upon extensive research into official and municipal records, studies the social and political fabric of France before the Revolution and attempts to explain why the Revolution broke out in that country rather than anywhere else in Europe. The success of L'ancien régime was almost as great as that of De la Démocratie. If Tocqueville had completed all three sections, it seems likely that his work on France would have eclipsed his work on America in importance (see: Harvey and Heseltine, The Oxford Companion to French Literature). Berlin, 1.Janvier 1863".

Third edition. Octavo (21cm). Contemporary quarter-morocco over marbled boards; 479pp. Spine leather dry, with a small loss at crown; mild rubbing to boards; internally clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good copy. Text entirely in French. Tocqueville's last major work and one of the most important early socio-political analyses of the French Revolution, informed by Tocqueville's personal experiences during the revolutions of 1848 as well as by his earlier explorations of the nature and growth of democracy, exemplified by his most famous work Democracy in America (1835). This copy with interesting provenance, originally from the library of Thomas Jefferson Coolidge (1831-1920), great grandson of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson and the last American plenipotentiary to France, appointed by President Harrison in 1892; his engraved bookplate affixed to front pastedown, hand-dated 1859.
Paris Michel Lévy Frères, Libraires-Éditeurs, 1856. 479 pages., blind binding, the book has waterdamage(not sticked), Classc and brilliant evocation of pre-revolutionary French society. Contrary to popular wisdom, according to which the French Revolution was the inevitable reaction to unbearable hardship, Tocqueville held that the Revolution followed when the government undertook action to improve the people's lot. Sociologists turned his observation into the abstract "law of rising expectations", whereas popular wisdom concerning the causes of the French Revolution more or less remained what it had been. So, its age notwithstanding, still a book to read, and re-read.
