Full leather covers rubbed with some board exposure tp back bottom corner by joint and upper fr. beside fore-edge, panelled sp. has good label and gilt 'I' (Vol.number). Apparently very scarce in any condition.

This is the first part only, of two, but the text seems to have been considerably revised and the dedication dropped from subsequent editions.

Press figure 8 on p. 6; 3 on pp. 286 and 386. Sheridan was Jonathan Swift's godson and the father of Richard Sheridan the statesman and dramatist. Early in his career he performed on stage and managed a theatre or two, but his lack of success caused him to lecture on elocution, which led to his writing on the English language and grammar.
