In fair condition, with scuffing and discoloration boards. Some cracking and losses to binding on spine. Cracking to front hinge. Some early text block pages slightly loose at bottom. Light markings and inscriptions. Ex-library form the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, with bookplate to front pastedown and assorted stampings. Includes a small assortment of black-and-white sketches throughout text block. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Sir William Bowman, 1st Baronet (1816-1892) was a British surgeon, histologist and anatomist best known for his usage of microscopes to study various human organs.

"The anatomical structure of all parts of the human eye including the ciliary muscle, based on microscopical observations, is minutely detailed. Commonly encountered ophthalmic diseases are discussed. An essay on the structure of the vitreous humor and several cases of ophthalmic diseases illustrating the lectures are appended" (Albert 290). Hirschberg, Vol. 8a, pp. 241-45; see pp. 230-60 for Bowman's entire career as an ophthalmologist. "Bowman was a seminal figure in the advancement of ophthalmic surgery in England. Bowman . Virtually created a new anatomy of the eye. Among his numerous discoveries are the anterior elastic lamina of the cornea (Bowman's membrane) and the ciliary muscle, as well as many surgical procedures, such as those for ptosis, lacrimal disorders, and formation of an artificial pupil. His inventions include lacrimal probes and suction-syringes for soft-cataract operations" (Albert et al., Source Book of Ophthalmology, p. 44).
