He introduced the fine-structure constant and pioneered X-ray wave theory. He mentored seven Nobel Prize recipients and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 84 times, a record for physicists. Born in the final years of the Kingdom of Prussia, Sommerfeld attended university in Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad).
