Hardback. Zustand: New. A loving portrait of the artist's wife and muse-and a chronicle of his own photographic language-over seven decades of marriageKnown for his complex photographs of the American social landscape, Lee Friedlander has also photographed his wife, Maria, for many years, directing his relentlessly curious eye to a subject he approaches with tenderness, awe and amusement. Maria presents a seven-decade extended portrait of the artist's wife, bringing together more than 70 images tracing the arc of their relationship, through marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood and beyond. On the surface, the pictures catalog the stuff of everyday life: Maria reading, driving, talking on the phone, lying in the sun, reading another book. Sometimes Maria serves as a muse in the traditional sense, with a composition that is nothing more than a man marveling at his wife. Many images reflect Friedlander's sustained appreciation for his wife's self-possessed style. But eventually, the portraits begin to take on the attributes of Friedlander's idiosyncratic approach to image-making-shadows, objects and reflections intrude, and certain images appear as fractured as cracked plates. Collecting photographs made over the course of a rich and complicated partnership, the book reflects the particular triumphs and mysteries of life with an artist.Lee Friedlander (born 1934) has published more than 60 monographs since 1969. He was represented alongside Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand in the 1967 New Documents exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, now understood as a landmark event in American documentary photography, and received his own retrospective at the same museum in 2005. He has lived and worked in New York since 1956.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. SIGNED. 62pp. Quarto [25 cm] Black and white illustrated wraps. With a small area of light soiling on the front wrap. Photographers at Work. A Smithsonian Series. "I learned when I was a young photographer, thank goodness, that the world was the most interesting place to photograph. And then I got married and had a family and there was another little world within the big world to photograph. Maria, in terms of the larger group of pictures of the family, is the heroine. So if we had a hundred pages to use we'd probably throw in the pictures of the kids and some of me, and Maria would still be the heroine." This copy is signed by Lee Friedlander on the copyright page. Signed.…

From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. From the publisher: "Containing the largest collection of renowned American photographer Lee Friedlander's own quotes ever published, Friedlander First Fifty offers a behind-the-scenes look at the photographer's diverse oeuvre that contextualizes and brings new life to the work, for everyone from the casual art appreciator to the most ardent Friedlander fan. Over a career spanning seven decades, Friedlander has produced an unrivaled photographic output documenting seemingly every aspect of the American "social landscape" (a term Friedlander coined), with a specific focus on creating books. "Books are my medium," Friedlander has been quoted as saying. Friedlander First Fifty provides an inside look at Friedlander's first fifty books, featuring extensive commentary directly from Friedlander on his own work. The book contains photographs from each of the first fifty books, as well as descriptions, publication information, and most notably, interviews with Friedlander and his wife, Maria, conducted by Friedlander's grandson, Giancarlo, and daughter, Anna, who co-published the book. The result is the most personal and candid look at Friedlander's life and career to date, as told by the artist to his own family. Published over a fifty-year period, from 1969-2018, the first fifty books describe the entirety of subject matterâ"from jazz musicians to factory workers to monuments to television screensâ"and genresâ"from self-portraits to street photographs to nudes to landscapesâ"for which Friedlander is known."
