Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -' ¿HE who knows me only by my writings does not know me,¿ said Leibniz. These words¿true, indeed, of every writer, but true of Leibniz in a way which gives a peculiar interest and charm to his life¿must be our excuse for prefacing what is to be said of his ¿New Essays concerning the Human Understanding¿ with a brief biographical sketch.Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was born in Leipzig June 21, 1646. His father, who died when Leibniz was only six years old, was a professor in the university and a notary of considerable practice. From him the future philosopher seems to have derived his extraordinary industry and love of detail. Such accounts as we have of him show no traces of the wonderful intellectual genius of his son, but only a diligent, plodding, faithful, and religious man, a thoroughly conscientious husband, jurist, and professor. Nor in the lines of physical heredity can we account for the unique career of Leibniz by his mother¿s endowments. The fact, however, that she was patient in all trial, living in peace with her neighbors, anxious for unity and concord with all people, even with those not well disposed to her, throws great light upon the fundamental trait of Leibniz¿s ethical nature' 176 pp. Deutsch.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Second Printing with date on the title page and "Griggs's Philosophical Classics" on the upper board. Preface, Detailed Contents, Criticism and Conclusion; xvii, 272 pages. The brown cloth shows some rubbing at the extremities; corners are gently bumped and the spine is a bit slanted; black lettering on the upper-board and gilt lettering on the spine remain bright and clear. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] The interior shows slight overall toning with sporadic respectful pencil lines in the margins by my philosopher-father. Endpapers are an attractive green with a floral design. There is a previous owner's discreet signature on the first blank page and an Edinburgh bookseller's stamp on the last. "The 'Nouveaux Essais,' in spite of its being one of the two most extended philosophical writings of Leibniz, is a compendium of comments, rather than a connected argument or exposition. It has all the suggestiveness and richness of a note-book, but with much also of its fragmentariness. I have therefore been obliged to supplement my account of it by constant references to the other writings of Leibniz, and occasionally to take considerable liberty with the order of the treatment of topics. . . I have endeavored, in the body of the work, to identify my thought with that of Leibniz as much as possible, to assume his standpoint and method, and, for the most part, to confine express criticism upon his limitations to the final chapter."---John Dewey, from the Preface. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.

Erstausgabe
FIRST EDITION. 1 blank leaf + half-title with publisher's ads on verso + TP + [v]-vii = Preface + [ix]xvii = Contents + 1-272 + 1 blank leaf. small Octavo. First Edition (Thomas, 2nd ed., 1939, p. 6). Dewey's Early Contributions to Grigg's Philosophical Classics Leibniz's New Essays on Human Understanding (Nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain) is his chapter-by-chapter rebuttal by Locke's, Essay concerning Humane Understanding. It is one of just two full-length works by Leibniz (the other being the Theodicy). It was finished in 1704, but Leibniz withheld its publication and it did not appear until sixty years later. This, then, is John Dewey's critique of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's critique of John Locke. Here, the 29-year-old Dewey point outs that Leibniz's main flaw lay in his direct adaptation of the methodology of his time and the source of his failure lay in his unquestioning adaptation of the syllogism, proof by contradiction and identity. This inherently limiting use of contradiction in Leibniz's system led Kant to develop his own "Critique of Pure Reason," as a way of intellectualizing the world through a more perfect method, his own synthetic and analytic methods. Dewey recognizes all of these connections and makes them for us, all the while walking us through the intricacies of Leibniz's complex but radical encounter with the world that Descartes left behind in his "Meditations."Like his Psychology (published the year before), Leibniz's New Essays Concerning the Human Understanding reflects Dewey's early commitment to Hegelian idealism, yet anticipates the examination of the process of inquiry that will figure so centrally in his future works. Original publisher's brown cloth with black lettering on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. With a former owner's Dec. 25, 1901") and the inked notation in the lower left corner of that same page ("From G.A.P."). With the most minor wear to the exterior.
