This richly illustrated volume based on newly discovered notebooks offers a tour through Leonardo's mechanical inventions that is rich in such surprises, a multi~faceted tribute to his far~sighted genius. As an engineer, Leonardo devised specific designs for screws, gears, bearings, rollers, axles ~ the entire range and variety of mechanics. Among his many sketches anticipating'modern technology is a drawing for ball~bearing identical to one made in the 1920s for blind~flying instruments used in airplane navigation. Three modern experts of our time have analyzed and described Leonardo's inventions from diverse viewpoints. In a chapter on military architecture, Ludwig Heydenreich describes Leonardo's plans to divert the Arno River as part of the ongoing war between Florence and Pisa, and also to fortify the town of Piombino. As Heydenreich points out, the scientific notes for the fortifications are mingled with musing on the natural beauty of this coastal town, and again the facets of Leonardo's mind can be seen at work. The chapter by Bern Dibner on machines and weaponry, more technical in scope, discusses in detail Leonardo's ballistic concerns and sketches, such as those of the paraboloid curve of a trajectory that is deformed by air resistance, which was developed into mathematical ballistics years later by Newton. Leonardo also designed experimentally a handgun matchlock, ; A multiple~barrel light cannon, and even a steam cannon similar to a type used in the American Civil War. Finally, Ladislao Reti's chapter On the elements of machines discusses in detail the mechanicaL devices of Codex Madrid I, showing that Leonardo had adopted a true scientific mode of thought: that a general principle can be derived through specific examples. This attitude is as novel as were some of the specifics Leonardo studied which are shown and discussed here in fascinating detail. These studies, originally published in The Unknoum Leonardo following the rediscovery of Leonardo's Madrid notebooks, are reprinted here in smaller, convenient format, with the original illustrations, hundreds of Leonardo's drawings, many reproduced in full color.
