Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 5 volumes in matching leather bindings. Bindings appear to be early 18th century, perhaps slightly older. Nice French bindings with raised cords, gold decoration on the spine, title labels on maroon leather. Foreedges reddened, marbled endpapers. Binds good and tight and attractive, even though leather is cracked here and there at the hinges; cords keep boards firmly attached. Spines are numbered, II, III, IV, V, VI. Full title of Vol II is: "Les Oevvres Moralees de Plutarque, translatees de Grec en Francois, reueues & corrigees en cette seconde Edition en plusieurs passages par le Translateur. Le II. Volume du I. Tome, qui contient XII. Traictez." Pages numbered 337-624, numbered on the recto only (so actually 574 printed pages). The next volume, marked III on the spine, is "Le III. Volume du I. Tome, qui contient XIII Traittez." Pages numbered 625-924. Final page says, "Fin des Oevvres Morales de Plutarque." The volume marked IV on the spine's full title is: "Les Oevvres Meslees de Plutarque, translatees de Grec en Francois, reueues & corrigees en cette seconde Edition en plusieurs passages par le Translateur. Tome Second. Pages numbered 1-340. The next volume pages numbered 341-624. The final volume pages numbered 625-824 + 4 page "Privilege du Roy" at the end. All page numbered on the recto only, so there are, in fact, twice as many 'pages' as the number indicated. This is the Second French Edition of Plutarch's works, lacking the first volume. Translated by Jacques Amyot, although his name does not appear anywhere. A few medium sized decorated initials and a fine header on a couple pages, but largely unadorned. Nice crisp square corners, only very minor foxing here and there. Please email with questions or to request photos. Each volume measures 4.25 x 6.5 inches.

Buch
Couverture rigide. Brunet, IV, 738. Restaurations habiles aux coins, coiffes et bordures. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] (8f.) 674ff. (45f.).

Baudrier V, 281; Arbour, 566.

Folio, ff. [vi], 668, [2] privilege, [86] indices; title page and first few leaves waterstained in foremargin; generally rather a battered copy, in contemporary French calf, covers with central oval ornament stamped in gilt (corners worn; spine heavily and very crudely repaired with black tape). Modern bookplate of the Society of Jesus at Mount St, London. Early edition of Amyot's translation of Plutarch's miscellaneous works, first published in Paris in 1572. This book is nominally in two volumes, but the second volume (from f. 359 onwards) has no separate register, signatures or title page and the book was clearly issued in this format. This 1588 edition is a reissue of the 1587 edition. This copy has a most interesting series of English provenances. The foot of the title page carries the signature 'Willi. Monyns': this is Sir William Monyns of Kent (d. 1643), who was one of the first group of baronets created by James I in 1611. Monyns was granted the honour on 29 June 1611, in return for the fee of £1000 - the very first baronet was Sir Nicholas Bacon, whose baronetcy dated from 20 May the same year. About a century later the book belonged to the scholar Francis Maseres (1731-1824), whose signature is at the head of the title page. He acquired it in 1756, the year he became a fellow of Clare College Cambridge; subsequently he was appointed Attorney-General of Quebec, where he served (without much success) for three years in the 1760s. Descended from Huguenot parents, Maseres would have been familiar with French literature, although he always remained a dogged adherent of the Church of England. The book next belonged to various members of the Forster family of antiquaries and scholars: first to the Rev. Benjamin Forster (1736-1805), close friend of Richard Gough - he and his brother Edward Forster made many antiquarian tours with Gough - and also of the poets William Mason and Thomas Gray. Benjamin was unmarried, and his books were carefully distributed to members of his family at his death: this one went to his nephew Thomas Furly Forster (1761-1825), botanist. A further inscription records that on 3 March 1829 the book went from E. Forster to his brother T. Forster - the latter probably being Thomas Ignatius Maria Forster (1789-1860), science writer and phrenologist, who was one of Thomas Furly Forster's two sons. BMC French p. 358.
