Foxed. Very Good. This copy does NOT have any library markings. NOTE: Why settle for a copy in a modern binding, or a rebacked copy, when you can get a copy in its original binding? First Edition. Horner's first book. "Horner was the most accomplished anatomist that our country has produced. If any proof of this assertion were needed, it would only be necessary to refer to the beautiful preparations, many exclusively the work of his hands, contained in the Horner and Wistar Museum of the University of Pennsylvania (Samuel Gross, Autobiography, Vol. II, p. 274). Horner s "enthusiasm for anatomy . . . attracted the attention of Caspar Wistar, at that time professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. In March, 1816, Wistar offered Horner the position of dissector, at a salary of five hundred dollars. The offer was at once accepted. . . . On the death of Wistar in 1818, John Syng Dorsey . . . was appointed to the chair of anatomy. Dorsey appointed Horner as his demonstrator. . . . Dorsey died soon after his appointment and the chair of anatomy passed to Dr. Physick. Physick continued Horner as demonstrator on liberal terms, and in 1820 he was made adjunct professor of anatomy and appointed professor when Dr. Physick resigned in 1831" (Kelly & Burrage).
