Zustand: Fine. Paris: Theatre du Soleil, (1985)., (1985). Fine. - Octavo, 7-1/2 inches high by 4-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound in textured buff wraps titled in red & black on front cover and the spine. 434 & [1] pages. Near fine. First edition. N.B.: The text is in French. Born in Oran, French Algeria to Jewish parents, the French feminist author and playwright Helene Cixous (born 1937) co-founded the Centre Universitaire de Vincennes where she established the first centre of women's studies at a European university. Known for her experimental writing style, she first gained attention for her first semi-autobiographical novel "Dedans" (Inside) in 1969. Her 1976 article "The Laugh of Medusa" placed her firmly as one of the early post-structural feminist thinkers. The author of more than 70 books, Cixous' "L'Histoire terrible mais inachevee de Norodom Sihanouk roi du Cambodge" is one of her most ambitious works as her protagonist Sihanouk takes on the Shakespearean dimensions of a tragic king. Though said to have been vain as a prince, the real historical Sihanouk came to realize his responsibilities to his country once he ascended to the throne. The history of modern Cambodia unfolds pitting the old versus the new, East versus West, in politics and religion as Sihanouk sought to keep his country growing and out of the wars which spread from Vietnam to Laos. History unfolds as the play begins with Sihanouk's abdication in 1955 through his arrest by the Khmer Rouge decades later. Historical characters such as John Gunther Dean, Henry Kissinger, Melvyn Laird, and Robert McClintock, among others representing the U.S. play a role, particularly in the early part of the play.
