The sale included: "American travel and exploration 1700-1900; a large collection relating to Pennsylvania, especially Pittsburgh, trans-Allegheny discovery and settlement; the old Northwest Territory and Mississippi Valley explorations, settlement and life on the Great Plains; narratives of the Overland Trail, California, Oregon, and the far West; the most outstanding private collection of narratives of Indian captivities and works relating to the Indians; histories and narratives of the French and Indian War, American Revolution, Whiskey Insurrection, War of 1812, Civil War, Indian wars." From the introduction - "It was in the realm of historical Americana that Mr. Shea reveled, and here his collecting was wide and systematic. Beginning with his own state, he collected works that related to its settlement and progress, local history and the manners and customs of the people, with special attention to early personal narratives. Naturally Pittsburgh was foremost in his thoughts, and on that subject he collected every- thing obtainable and formed one of the finest collections in existence, not only of historical material but of Pittsburgh authors and imprints. Closely associated is the important collection of trans-Allegheny discovery and settlement beginning with the period of the French and Indian War. and including items about Washington's expedition, the Braddock defeat, the defense of the frontiers, settlements on the Ohio and Mississippi and the navigation of those rivers, including the finest set of Cramer's "Navigators" in existence and a practically unknown series of prospectuses of the Scioto Company. Mr. Shea's special delight was in personal narratives of all kinds, but he devoted most of his attention to his famous collection of narratives of Indian captivity, an alphabetical list of which follows this introduction. This list includes the separate narratives and only a few of the many hundreds found in collected works described in this catalogue. The rarest of this group is the Fleming narrative published in Philadelphia in 1757 with an introduction newly ascribed to Benjamin Franklin, believed to have been printed by Franklin & Hall. Aside from the narratives of Indian captivity, there is a huge collection of historical material relating to the Indians, including some of the rarest items. Highly interested in the settlement and development of the Far West, Mr. Shea collected a large proportion of the overland narratives and accounts of exploring expeditions, early guides, and proposals for and early accounts of settlements, including many bibliographical and historical treasures. The broad field of general historical and American travel is covered by the most authoritative works contemporary with the events described. The French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812 groups are not only large but contain many of the most important and rarest items.
