A SHORT INTRODUCTION OF GRAMMAR. Compiled and Set Forth for the Bringing Up of All Those that Intend to Attain to the Knowledge of the Latin Tongue. London: Printed by S. Buckley & T. Longman, 1758. 16mo (14 x 8 cm; signed [A]-N8). 194, [4] pages. Woodcut title page; final page is a full-page woodcut illustration. [Bound with:] LILY'S RULES CONSTRUED: Where unto Are Added Tho. Robertson's Heteroclites, The Latin Syntaxis, Also There Are Added the Rules for the Genders of Nouns, and Preterperfect Tenses and Supines of Verbs, in English Alone. London: Printed by S. Buckley and T. Longman, 1757. 16mo ([A]-F8). [10], 92, [2] pages. TEXTUAL DEFECTS: While all leaves are present (collated complete), the volume is closely trimmed with loss of much of the printed marginalia and with a slight impact on the extremities of the text in the preface and on a few other leaves. Some headlines and catchwords are also lost. There are repairs to the gutters of a few leaves, slightly impacting the text. Bound in early full leather with raised bands. The spine is vertically cracked at the joints, but both boards are held securely by the cords. Ex-Sondley Reference Library with tasteful bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamps, and two marginal ink accession stamps. Sporadic moderate soiling and occasional minor stains, in no way affecting legibility. Early manuscript marginalia and in-text notes, and a few instances of brief underlining and other minor marks. Ownership inscription dated 1770 on the rear free endpaper. Later edition. Lily's Grammar was first issued in the mid-16th century and remained a standard text in British schools well into the Victorian era. It was published nearly two decades after the death of William Lily (1468?1522/1523), whose name has long been associated with the work. However, "it is a composite piece, which Lily did not write, though grammars written by him became important sources for the work." --Oxford DNB.
