Benjamin Peirce, who taught at Harvard University for about 50 years, was once considered the leading mathematician in America, and one of the first Americans whose work was viewed as world class. 'Linear Associative Algebra', which was his best work, introduced new mathematical terms such as "idempotent" and "nilpotent". The first edition of this work was published in an edition of 100 copies, which was lithographed from his own handwritten text.
