Erstausgabe
First US edition, first printing, with publisher's slug on copyright page. Cloth with dust jacket. Very good copy in near very good dust jacket shallowly chipped at top of spine. The second of two published books by this Jamaica-born British author; both, based on her own life experiences, have been described as bildungsromans, in which the lead character matures. Both are now part of the feminist canon, having been republished by Virago Books, and first editions of her books have vanished from the market. Bliss' closest and most intimate personal and literary contacts were all women, especially fellow West Indian Jean Rhys. Note: The narrator uses racist language in her early days on the island.
