Charles Pinot Duclos (1704-1772), Autor, Historiker und Enzyklopädist schrieb Abhandlungen zur Kulturgeschichte, Romane und Erzählungen und war viele Jahre als Sekretär der Académie Francaise" tätig.- Duclos studierte in Paris Jura und arbeitete nach seinem Studium bei einem Anwalt. Das Café Procope", ein beliebter Pariser Treffpunkt für Schriftsteller und Künstler der Aufklärung, wurde auch für ihn ein wichtiger Ort, an dem er in Kontakt mit verschiedenen Autoren kam. Er fing selbst zu schreiben an und wurde 1739 in die Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres aufgenommen, 1747 in die Académie Francaise, deren Sekretär er bis 1755 war.- Aufgrund parlamentarischer Querelen und Konflikten zwischen Ludwig XV und seinen Unterstützern einerseits und einem herausragenden Gegner andererseits (Louis-René de Caradeuc de La Chalotais), zu dem Duclos engen Kontakt hatte wurde ihm nahe gelegt, das Land für eine Weile zu verlassen. 1763 ging er nach England und drei Jahre später nach Italien, kehrte dann aber zum Ende seines Lebens nach Paris zurück.-Das vorliegende Buch ist ein Sittengemälde der Zeit, in der der Geist der Wahrheit und Freiheit durch die Pariser Salons wehte und Duclos inmitten weilte.- 2 Teile in 1 Band. - Einband stärker beschabt, bestoßen und handschriftlich beschrifteten Rückentitel; Notizen am Vorsatz; Seiten gering gebräunt uns vereinzelt gering fleckig.
