BALDAEUS, Philippus (1632-1672). Wahrhaftige ausfurliche Beschreibung der beruhmten Ost-Indischen Kusten Malabar und Coromandel, als auch der Insel Zeylon. Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius Waesberge and Johannes von Someren, 1672. 3 parts in one volume. Folio (12 2/8 x 8 inches). Title-page printed in red and black (a bit browned). Additional engraved title-page, 2 engraved portraits and 34 double-page engraved plates and maps, 55 engraved illustrations in the text, some full-page (marginal worming at end). Provenance: 18th-century engraved bookplate with the initial "T" by Holtzmann, on the verso of the front free endpaper; with the bookseller's label of T.O. Weigel in Leipzig on the front paste-down; and the modern bookplate of William Davignon beneath it; with the posthumous book label of Wolfgang A. Herz, his sale, Christie's, 9th December, 2009, lot 116 First edition in German of this magnificently illustrated work on Southern India and Ceylon, by the Dutch Calvinist missionary, Philippus Baldaeus. It forms a history of Ceylon under the Portuguese, as well the later Dutch period of occupation, the final part describing the Hindu religion in considerable detail. Some facts were derived from the captured Jesuit seminary at Jafnapatam, and from the manuscript of the Calicut Jesuit, Giacomo Fenicio, while borrowings were also made from the work of another missionary, Abraham Roger. The original Dutch edition contained one extra plate (in part III) which, in this German edition, is used as a text illustration. Howgego B10; Landwehr VOC 557 (not calling for the "Vorrede an den Leser" (3p.) but present here). .

Buch
Second edition in English, from volume III of A. & J. Churchill's Collection of Voyages and Travels, folio, 35 x 21.5 cm., engraved title, frontispiece portrait of the author, title, pp.(503)-822, [16, index], 33 (of 34) folding plates, maps & plans, (lacking only an audience of the King of Kandy), two portraits, 53 text illustrations. Signatures are 6M 9Z1. The letterpress title (p.[501]) has signature mark 6M at foot, and 'Vol. III.' Preface begins on p.503. An excellent copy bound in full contemporary speckled calf, neatly re-cased. Lacking only the plate of the audience with the King of Kandy. This second edition of the first English translation was published by John Churchill after the death of his brother Aylsham. It had first appeared 1704 as the last part of volume III of the now infamous A Collection of Voyages and Travels. In 1704 John and Aylsham Churchill exploited the almost non-existent copyright laws to publish a massive series of tracts relating to the "New World", works either scarce enough to warrant reprinting or had yet to be published in English, to sate the growing thirst from the public for new information on far away countries. This work, by Philip Baldaeus (1632-1671), was of the type most sought after: an account of the East-Indies adorned with images of cities, languages, and animals new to European eyes. Baldaeus had accompanied the invading Dutch force to Ceylon and was only the second European to publish an account of the Tamil people and their way of life. His specimens of the Tamil language, including his translation of the Lord's Prayer, were the first treatise an on Indian language to printed in Europe. This superb copy has 34 double page plates, maps and plans: Malabar [map]; Amadabath; Suratte; The English fort of Bombay; Goa [plan]; Cranganor; Cochin; Cochin [plan]; The city of Cowlang [plan]; Tutecoryn [birds-eye view]; Choromandel, [Map]; Negapatam; Paliacatta; Masulipatam; Malabar language (3 plates), and in [Part II], Ceylon, Insula Ceylan [Map]; Fort of Batecalo; The city of Galle; Colombo [plan]; Siege of Colombo [Map]; Negumbo; Island of Manaer [map]; [map] Regnum Jafnapatnam; Fort at Jafnapatnam; Mallagam; Paneteripou; Kopay; Illondi Matual; The church Poelepolay; Catching horses in Jafnapatnam; The catching of Elephants. Both portraits, of the author and of Gerard Hulst, are present. Mitter p.57; Landwehr 260 (556).

Erstausgabe
"Erste deutsche Ausgabe, die im gleichen Jahr wie die holländische Originalausgabe erschien und auch dieselben Illustrationen (außer dem neu gestochenen Titel) enthält. ? Berühmtes Werk über die Landeskunde und Kolonialgeschichte der Malabar- und Coromandel-Küste sowie der angrenzenden Regionen und von Ceylon. Der holl. Missionar Baldaeus (1632- 1671) "arrived in Ceylon in 1656 from Batavia with four other pastors and remained on the island until 1665. He immediately assigned himself and one other pastor to Jaffna, the Tamil region in the north of the island, while two more were sent to Galle and the fourth to Colombo. The pastors set about taking over the churches and schools left by the various Catholic missions and converting their flocks to the true Reformed faith`. [?] Baldaeus' important Naauwkeurige beschryvinge .` details the Dutch period in Ceylon, as well as describing the history of the island under the Portuguese. He also provides a detailed description of the Hindu religion, although borrowing much from the earlier work of the missionary Abraham Roger. Baldaeus appears to have gathered much of his information from the captured Jesuit seminary at Jaffnapatam, and from the manuscript of the Calicut Jesuit, Giacomo Fenicio." (Howgego I, S. 79 ff.) ? Lederband beschabt, Ecken und Kanten bestoßen und mit Fehlstellen; an den Gelenken stellenweise eingerissen, Wurmspuren; der gest. Titel mit schmaler Fehlstelle am Rand, Drucktitel verso mit alten Dublettenstempeln, anfänglich mit schmalem Wurmgang im Falz (kein Textverlust), Text etwas gebräunt, aber insgesamt noch gut erhalten. ? Tiele 70 Anm.; Landwehr, VOC 557; vgl. Cox I, S. 283 und Griep/Luber I, 69; VD17 39:135493U.".
