The material and specimens for the work were collected mainly by the museum's founder, Dr. Emilio Goeldi, during the early 20th century. Beautifully illustrated.

Edition limited to 2000 copies, this 1/950 or the regular edition in English, folio, pp. [6], 274, [1]; title-p. printed in blue and black, 42 full-page color plates from paintings by the author; original stiff printed wrappers with a few small chips and creases and one tear repaired at corner of bottom cover, but generally very good and sound. The author, justice of the Supreme Court of Para, died before the work was completed and consequently this volume is all that was published.

This book displays a new primate subspecies known as Saguinus fuscicollis cruzlimai. Authored other works as Arte pré-histórica na Amazônia (Pre-historic art in Amazon) and A cerâmica no Estado do Pará (Ceramics in Pará State) He was honored in 1937 by having a new subspecies, Eladinea Miranda-Ribeiro (Amphibia) named for him.Text is clean, tight, unmarked save for previous owner's (James M. Dolan, Jr., Director of Collections, San Diego Zoo).blind stamp on title page. Book has a current rebinding in green glazed cloth with gold-stamped titles along spine. Binding is immaculate.
