Leichter Knick. - Das erste Stück, das "Intermezzo" h-moll op. 119 Nr. 1, erhielt Clara Schumann mit folgendem bedeutsamen Kommentar von Brahms: "Ich bin in Versuchung, Dir ein kleines Klavierstück abzuschreiben, weil ich gern wüßte, wie Du Dich damit verträgst. Es wimmelt von Dissonanzen! Diese mögen recht sein und zu erklären - aber sie schmecken Dir vielleicht nicht, und da wünschte ich, sie wären weniger recht, aber appetitlich und nach Deinem Geschmack. Das kleine Stück ist ausnehmend melancholisch, und sehr langsam zu spielen' ist nicht genug gesagt, jeder Takt und jede Note muß wie ritard. klingen, als ob man Melancholie aus jeder einzelnen saugen wolle, mit Wollust und Behagen aus besagten Dissonanzen! Herr Gott, die Beschreibung wird Dir Lust machen!" Clara Schumann war tief beeindruckt von dem Stück und bedankte sich am 8.
