Early reprint (first published by Harper & Brothers in 1924). Issued with a slipcase and dust jackets but those are not present. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 16.25cm. Uniformly bound in dark red cloth; light sunning/color fading to spines with slight fraying and wear at ends, light rubbing to boards, gilt stamping to front boards and spines still fairly bright but not vibrant. Gilt top edge; toning to deckle fore-edges. Some foxing and or toning to endpapers; foxing strongest on several initial and terminal leaves of both volumes but with scattered mostly light occurrences to interior leaves. Bindings are firm. Still an attractive very good- set. Volume I has a frontispiece photograph of Mark Twain in bed at his home in New York in 1906, with captioned tissue protective sheet. The front endpaper is printed with a facsimile of Mark Twain's handwriting "I am writing from the grave.". Volume II has a frontispiece photograph of Mark Twain dictating his autobiography at Dublin, New Hampshire in 1906, also with captioned tissue protective sheet. Condition near fine, corners and edges very slightly rubbed, else fine, contents very clean. The "A" variant first edition as described in BAL, 3537 which contains the two pages of advertisements at the rear of the second volume and the printed tissue leaves following each frontispiece. Hardcover, two volumes bound in blue cloth titled in gilt on the spines with a facsimile of Twain's signature on the front covers. The top edges are gilt. Illustrated with a photogravure portrait frontispiece of Twain, with a printed tissue guard, in each volume. Very good. First editions, so stated, with the publication date indicated as "H-Y", August 1924. Speculative first state with 2 pages of ads in volume two, (BAL-3537).
