Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Maxims, Characters, and Reflections, Critical, Satyrical and Moral. Printed for J. and R. Tonson, 1756. First edition, first issue. Xvi, 268pp., contemp. calf (spine rubbed; f.f.e.p. away). Frances Macartney (ca.1724-1789) was prominent in Court; she appeared as ¿Fanny¿ in Horace Walpole¿s poem, ¿The Beauties,¿ published in 1746. She eloped with Fulke Greviile, of Wilbury House, marrying him in 1748. She supposedly appears in the present work in the guise of Flora, and is said to have contributed her own writings. Her most famous poem, ¿Prayer for Indifference,¿ an attack on the cult of ¿sensibility,¿ first appeared in the ¿Edinburgh Chronicle.¿ in 1759. R.B. Sheridan dedicated his work, ¿The Critic,¿ to her.
