The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The white covers have some generalized toning, especially to the spine and spine joints. The text pages are generally clean and bright, though there is generalized light toning throughout. The cover art is by Richard Powers. "The plot revolves around fourteen colonists of the planet Delmak-O. They are: Betty Jo Berm, a linguist; elderly Bert Kosler, settlement custodian; Maggie Walsh, a theologian; Ignatz Thugg, who oversees thermoplastics; Milton Babble, a physician; Wade Frazer, a psychologist; Tony Dunkelwelt, a geologist; Glen Belsnor, who specialises in telecommunications; Susie Smart, a typist; Roberta Rockingham, a sociologist; Ben Tallchief, a naturalist; Seth and Mary Morley, a marine biologist couple; and Ned Russell, an economist. Boards have a dent across the left side of the front panel and the edge of the spine and there is another small dent in the edge next to the rear panel a little further down. There is browning to the page edges with a little scattered spotting to the top edges and a few small spots to the fore edges. There is a trace of a price in pencil to the top corner of the front free endpaper and slight browning to the rear free endpaper but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has a little creasing around the spine but otherwise only very slight edge and surface wear. First printing.

An about near fine copy in a very good or better, unclipped dust jacket. Binding is tight and sturdy, minor shelfwear to extremities, small spot of rubbing or adhesion lift near lower corner of flyleaf, faint offsetting opposite half-title, pastedowns just beginning to separate along joints, although fully secure, small light stain to first few pages, a few gently dog-eared pages. The unclipped dust jacket remains in nice shape, with light shelfwear to extremities, notably the spine tips, two small closed tears to back panel with a touch of toning to upper. A very presentable copy, protected in archival mylar.
