Mbone (short for'multicast backbone') was an experimental backbone for IP multicasttraffic across the Internet developed in the early 1990s. It requiredspecialized hardware and software. Since most Internet routers have IPmulticast disabled due to concerns of bandwidth tracking and billingthe Mbone evolved to connect multicast-capable networks over theexisting Internet infrastructure. The commercialization of multicastrouters is difficult because there are no efficient access controlcapabilities to the multicast trees (multicast routers and theirprotocols), and because Internet service providers have difficultycomputing charges for multicast traffic.
