A highly important book, commemorating the greatest feat in early American engineering history, the opening of the Erie Canal connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, among some 400 miles or more of canal-building. Also contains magnificent lithographic plates drawn by George Catlin, including the superbly illustrated Lockport plates. Additionally there is the hand-colored folding map, the one of the state of New York with a profile of the Grand Canal. Formerly (sea captain) H.P. Osborn's copy, with his engraved bookplate at front pastedown, also so stamped in ink to a front flyleaf and inscribed "To Osborn, Esq. Darling Master of his Brittanick Majestys Packer Swallow." Also, there is important manuscript material pasted within the book: An autograph letter signed from the Mayor of New York, Philip Hone, dated 4 October 1826, presenting this book and an award to Osborn to commemorate the canal celebration. Also, a second mounted ALS from Hone reports on the difficulty in finding a bound copy of the book for Mr. Osborn, and there is a mounted autograph presentation slip from the Mayor as well in a later part of the text. Mounted to the reverse of the "Fireworks" plate is a printed acknowledgement to the crew of the Swallow from the Mohawk Insurance Company for preventing fire destruction of the Schuylkill. Missing some plates, but with highly interesting provenance from a player in the canal project. Scuffed, spine defective; many quires and gatherings loose & sprung, expert repairs to versos of some plates, occasional foxing most notably at facsimile letters, else a good copy wanting restoration & rebinding, or perhaps individual re-sale or gifting of the plates and their associated text pages to interested parties. lg3. Rachel Ann Robertson, the 20-year-old daughter of artist Archibald Robertson, executed the plate facing page 380 from "The Students of Colombia College," "by a young Lady"; a letter laid into the text acknowledges her contribution to the celebratory volume. Other plates include views of the New York harbor crowded with shipping, maps of the waterways in the United States and New York State, badges and emblems of the societies of saddlers, house painters, chair-makers, rope-makers, and a series of fire engines. The foldout protrudes beyond the edges and its margin has closed tears and folds, but none affects the illustration itself. 8 facsimiles of testimonial letters. A paper presentation label from the City of New York is affixed to the front pastedown, as is a small previous owner's sticker. There is foxing throughout, most sigjnificantly on the frontispiece and title page. The plates are well preserved with an occasional closed tear, and pencil marginalia on a few. Cadwallader D. Colden was a former Mayor of New York City, and a United States Congressman from New York State. A proponent of a national canal system, he was commissioned by the Common Council of New York City to write his Memoir on the Erie Canal during the last days of its construction in 1825. All lithographs were executed by Anthony Imbert, whom Harry Peters called the pioneer lithographer of New York City, after drawings by Asher B. Durand and others, including at least 3 by George Catlin. One of the first recorded American books illustrated with lithographs. An important volume, commemorating the greatest feat of American engineering to that date, the opening of the Erie Canal connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. This copy with the name in gilt on the front cover of Samuel L. Mitchill. There is a portrait of Mitchill in the book engraved by Asher Durand. The front endpaper contains an inscription by Mitchill dated 1827 to his brother, Singleton, mentioning that he had received two copies of the book and was giving him this one. On the next blank page is an inscription dated 1849 by Singleton to his grandson. At the end of the book are bound a number of blank pages but for two which contain manuscript descriptions of Signals for the Grand Canal Celebration Fleet of Steam Gallies, with several small watercolors of flags. Samuel L. Mitchill was a founding editor of The Medical Repository, the first medical journal in the United States, as well as a member of both the United States Congress and Senate. Mitchill strongly endorsed the building of the Erie Canal, sponsored by his friend and political ally DeWitt Clinton, and gave a speech at its dedication. Mitchill suggested renaming the United States of America Fredonia, combining the English "freedom" with a Latinate ending. His suggestion was not taken seriously, though some towns took on the name. He was known for his widespread knowledge, Thomas Jefferson considering him the "Congressional Dictionary." Light to moderate foxing, but generally a Near Fine and special copy of this rare and attractive book.
