A friend of Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, and D'Alembert, and active contributor to the Encyclopédie Méthodique, the Abbé Morellet translated into French Beccaria's treatise on crimes and punishments in 1766, and wrote many other works including several on political economy and an account of eighteenth century literature and philosophy. He was dubbed by Voltaire Abbé Mords-les because of his biting wit.
