Despite these faults the book includes a nice, and not terribly common, example of red paste-decorated edges. Acquired from a Birmingham, Alabama estate but from a family whose eighteenth to mid-twentieth century roots, as evidenced by inscriptions and the like among other books in the large collection, were in New England and, in particular, within Maine. Maximilien de Bethune (1560-1641) was a French Huguenot and prominent figure in the court of Henry IV of Navarre during the French wars of religion. He served Henry for nearly 40 years and was instrumental in French fiscal and military policy.
