Bound by "Bayntun, Binder, Bath, Eng." in brown half-morocco and cloth, 5 raised bands, gilt panelled spine, all edges gilt. Clean, sharp copy. Scarce in the first edition, with this extra illustrated being a unique, one-of-a-kind. Highly Collectible. First edition of Mackay's important work of social psychology, studying the "madness of crowds" in its many manifestations over history. Still in print, Mackay's book has had a profound influence on economics and sociology, with many modern economists referring to his work when analysing contemporary market bubbles. The Memoirs discusses popular delusions of all types and considers the credulous enthusiasm of mankind for phenomena such as alchemy, witchcraft, relics, the Crusades, urban myths, as well as economic events such as the tulip bubble, the Mississippi Bubble, and the South Sea Bubble. "Charles Mackay's passionate erudition and urbane, unaffected prose style contributed to make him one of the chief figures in the establishment of Victorian journalism as a dignified profession" (ODNB). Dennistoun & Goodman 58; Kress C.5560; Zerden, pp. 77-8; not in Goldsmiths' or Mattioli. Three volumes, octavo (224 x 139 mm). Early 20th-century half calf by Worsfold, red morocco labels, gilt ornaments in compartments, blue endpapers, top edges gilt. Frontispieces to each volume with thin paper guards, 2 engraved portrait plates to vol. 3. Bound with half-titles in vols. II and III (only, as issued), without publisher's advertisements as often. Pen mark to rear cover of vol. III, 65 mm repaired closed tear in inner margin and 25 mm closed tear in outer margin (neither affecting text) of title page of vol. I, light fraying at extremities of first few leaves of the same volume, contents otherwise fresh. A very good copy.

First edition of this classic study of crowd psychology, a compilation of human folly throughout the ages. Octavo, three volumes, illustrated. Bound in three quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands. With an autographed letter signed by Charles MacKay in 1867 laid in. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds is divided into three broad categories, including 'National Delusions,' 'Peculiar Follies,' and 'Philosophical Delusions.' The author discusses a wide variety of subjects and events, which include economic bubbles like the tulip craze of Holland in 1637 and the Mississippi Company financial bubble of 1719; alchemy, which was of particular interest to individuals who wanted to create gold out of lesser-valued materials; the Crusades, also known as the Middle Ages mania; witch hunts, the persecution of thousands of innocent victims that arose from either supernatural ill fortune or neighbors with a score to settle; duels; the political and religious influence on beards; and several others. The impact of Mackay s work has been remarkably far-reaching, influencing such fields as popular psychology and the stock market as noted by The New York Times, wrote: "Any investor who has not read Charles Mackay s "Tulipomania," from his classic Extraordinary Popular Delusions, first published in 1841, should grab this book for that exercise alone.".

"Men," the author contends, "think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds." In developing his theories of mass behavior, Mackay analyzes a breadth of historical examples ranging from witch hunts, alchemists, and famous haunted houses to the South Sea Bubble of 1720 and the Crusades. The impact of Mackay's work has been remarkably far-reaching, influencing such diverse fields as popular psychology and the charting of the stock market as noted by The New York Times, which urged: "Any investor who has not read Charles Mackay's 'Tulipomania,' from his classic Extraordinary Popular Delusions, first published in 1841, should grab this book for that exercise alone." Publisher s original embossed cloth and gilt decorated cloth binding, in remarkably good condition for books that are 125 years old, cocked back to front. Pages 275-288 of Vol I with bottom corners creased. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds is an early study of crowd psychology by Scottish journalist Charles Mackay, first published in 1841 under the title Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions. The book was first published in three volumes: "National Delusions", "Peculiar Follies", and "Philosophical Delusions". Mackay was an accomplished teller of stories, though he wrote in a journalistic and somewhat sensational style. The subjects of Mackay's debunking include alchemy, crusades, duels, economic bubbles, fortune-telling, haunted houses, the Drummer of Tedworth, the influence of politics and religion on the shapes of beards and hair, magnetisers (influence of imagination in curing disease), murder through poisoning, prophecies, popular admiration of great thieves, popular follies of great cities, and relics. Present-day writers on economics, such as Michael Lewis and Andrew Tobias, laud the three chapters on economic bubbles. In later editions, Mackay added a footnote referencing the Railway Mania of the 1840s as another "popular delusion" which was at least as important as the South Sea Bubble. In the 21st century, the mathematician Andrew Odlyzko pointed out, in a published lecture, that Mackay himself played a role in this economic bubble; as a leader writer in The Glasgow Argus, Mackay wrote on 2 October 1845: "There is no reason whatever to fear a crash". 2 vols in 1, 8vo., viii, 303; vi, 322 pp., illustrations in the text, some foxing to title and occasionally elsewhere, contemporary calf gilt, marbled sides and edges, a good copy. A classic account of popular follies and the madness of crowds and an important early work of social psychology. In the preface it is stated "The object of the Author in the following pages has been to collect the most remarkable instances of those moral epidemics which have been excited, sometimes by one cause and sometimes by another, and to show how easily the masses have been led astray, and how imitative and gregarious men are, even in their infatuations and crimes". The chapters on the financial fads, are still considered crucially important even today. The Financial Times rated it second among the top ten greatest books on investment ever published. Since its first publication in 1841 it has seldom been out of print. Bernard Baruch wrote a new forward in the 1932 edition, stating that it had saved him in 1929, getting him out shortly before the market crashed. Mackay could never have foreseen how his examination of mass hysteria in the various bubbles -- tulipomania, John Law, and the South Sea -- would take on a life of its own, and commence a new field of study, the behaviour of the crowd, which would later on be revisited by Le Bon, Freud, Trotter, and Canetti. In other chapters Mackay vividly describes crusades, fortune telling, slow poisoners, witch hunts and a variety of religious cults. The author Charles Mackay (1814-1889) worked as a journalist for many years in London and North America contributing to the Telegraph and the Times. His journalistic skill can be seen in his lively portraits of imposters, thieves, quacks, pseudo-scientists, gamblers and fraudsters. Charles Ellis' Classics II. (Investors Anthology).
