Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an in-depth exploration of Alexander Pope, one of the most celebrated poets of the 18th century. While Pope is known for his piercing and often vicious wit, the author reveals Pope's life was marked by personal tragedy and physical suffering. Nevertheless, Pope rose above these challenges to become a central figure in literary London, engaging in famous feuds with other prominent authors of the day. The author argues that Pope's poetry should not be taken at face value, as he often used satire to thinly veil deeply personal feelings. This book will appeal to those interested in Pope, the literary culture of 18th-century England, and the relationship between biography and poetry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
