Once read one is compelled to share its wonder with others. Rushdie's story of family life in India at the end of British Colonialism and the onset of independence and partition (narrated through the eyes of Saleem, born at midnight on Independence Day) not only won the Booker Prize in 1981 but also the Booker of Bookers Prizes in 1993 and in 2008 to celebrate 25 and 40 years of the award. Saleem's narration seduces the imagination with its potent images, its drama and wit and the irresistible force of history. In near fine condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is very slight shelf wear to the top and bottom edges of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears. There is a neat owners name to the front end paper, foxing to the top edge, a mark to the fore edge and toning to the rear end papers. The clipped dust jacket, protected in a clear, removable cover is in near fine condition with a sunned spine. Would make a wonderful gift or an impressive addition to a library. Will be dispatched carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.

A very rare first edition of the third issue of the reborn Granta, champion of new writing, which grew to be one of the best known, most widely read and longest enduring of a notoriously ephemeral species, the literary magazine. Includes two chapters from Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children (the only pre-publication of any part of that book). Grantas 1,2 and 3 are now almost always seen only as reprints with a new cover, in a design which became the Granta house style for all issues subsequent to this one. Other writers who were or later became well known, contributed to Granta 3 (though none of them were as celebrated or controversial as Rushdie) included Angela Carter, Alan Sillitoe, Russell Hoban, Emma Tenant and Lorna Sage. This copy of Granta 3 is quite well preserved despite its 42 years. However, the ochre paper wrap is a little tarnished in places; there is a tiny tear at the bottom of the front cover where it meets the spine and there is a previous resale price written in pencil on the first inside page.
