Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xvii + 158 pages. Ex-foreign university library, stamped 'dublette' (duplicate), appears to have been uncirculated; with internal ownership and inventory markings, some cancelled. Book is clean and bright, untanned, with unmarked text, firmly bound. A label taped across the lower spine. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This edited volume brings together German and American historians and demographers to compare the immigration experiences of two nations that, by the late 20th century, had become the leading immigrant-receiving countries among advanced industrial states. The book challenges the prevailing assumption that the United States is an immigrant country while Germany is not, revealing instead striking parallels alongside significant differences in how the two societies have absorbed, regulated and conceptualised large-scale immigration. The contributions emerged from three working groups convened to address distinct policy dimensions: admissions policy, the absorption of immigrants, and the responsibilities of both receiving and sending countries. The volume concludes with a set of specific policy recommendations aimed at harmonising international responses to migration pressures. The opening chapter examines Germany's transformation from a country of emigration to one of immigration across the 19th and 20th centuries, a trajectory that fundamentally reshaped German society yet long went unacknowledged in official self-understanding. Subsequent essays analyse how conceptions of citizenship and nationality differ between the two countries, how demographic change driven by migration and fertility trends is likely to transform their ethnic compositions, and how naturalisation laws and public attitudes shape the integration of newcomers. A significant section also investigates the economic impact of migration, specifically the role of remittances and their effect on the development of sending countries. Co-editor Myron Weiner (1939-1999), who held the Ford International Professorship of Political Science at MIT, brought expertise in the politics of migration and demographic change, while Klaus J. Bade, then directing the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies at the University of Osnabrück, contributed deep historical knowledge of German migration patterns. The comparative framework remains directly relevant as both countries continue to grapple with questions of immigration policy, citizenship reform and the political mobilisation of nativist sentiment that the volume's contributors identified as emerging forces nearly three decades ago.…

Softcover. Zustand: neu. 1. Auflage. - in englischer Sprache - Studien zur Migrationsforschung, Band 20 532 pages. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REZENSION in: socialnet Rezensionen, 23.07.2024: "[.] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The demographic change in the EU will affect everybody and will lead to social and political tensions that can seriously threaten the foundations of liberal democracy if current politics continue. A combination of three main factors creates the so-called "Emigration factoryâ in South-Eastern Europe: The policy of extracting the youth labour force from the EU periphery to the EU centres as the key measure to recovering Western Europe population and economy, the corruption as the most important push factor for contemporary emigration from Croatia and the Western Balkans, and the understanding of capitalism by employers in SEE as a one-way process of profit without adequate rewarding of workers. Does Gastarbeiter"s history repeat itself? Are the EU migrations an interest-neutral and accidental social phenomenon? Is the EU going to become a neoliberal battlefield of a struggle for the human resource? What are the concrete solutions at the national and EU level? Why is the corruption index in Croatia and the Western Balkans growing with increased emigration, and what are the other consequences of emigration? Can the innovative approach to digital demography revolutionize our knowledge about migrations. …
