438 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 037030683X Two b&w maps. "Among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in the Imperial War Museum are some 300 letters dating from his time as professional head of the British Army. W ilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of th e F i r s t World War the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficu lt i es o f me et ing wide-range military commitments throughout the world. At home domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil power. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in ord er to en fo rce th e peace treaty with Germany and support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, Indian and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal vio len ce i n Pa les tine . A ll these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies whic h ma teria lly c ontr ibute d to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring from the War Office." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, two very tiny corner bumps, tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge, mi nor wr inkli ng at top of spin e, sm all b ump at bottom edge of rear board, tiny dint at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, very small closed tear at bottom of rear flap with soft crease. Very Good/Very Good.
